New Chipotle in the Burg

After all the rumors about a Chipotle coming to JMU, and possibly going into the new East Campus Dining Hall, the new Mexican eatery has opened on Reservoir. Where would the best place be to put such a restaurant? How about 250 yards from Qdoba. That's right, the newest place to open up in the Forbes shopping center is a competing Mexican restaurant inbetween Qdoba and the Reservoir St. entrance to JMU. With a soft opening the past few days, Chipotle has already drummed up a lot of interest, including waits of over half an hour to get food in the evenings. Today is the "Grande Opening," so we'll see how long the strong support lasts. For right now though, it looks like another option has opened in the burg that people have been asking for. Map

Coming Soon
This blogger can't wait to get a taste of the new Beyond, thai-fusion restaurant, opening on Water St. in the old Spanky's building sometime in August. Also coming is a new Italian resturant in the Luigi's space that's been sitting vacant since this past winter. Oh, and while I'm talking about restaurants downtown...while I was on my writing hiatus, Jack Brown's Beer and Burger Joint opened up (and has since added a small outdoor patio area). With a small (but amazing) food menu, a very extensive beer selection, and an outstanding staff, this bar has quickly gotten quite a following. Downtown Harrisonburg is slowly becoming a hotspot for food and nightlife.

JMU Students Very Happy and Eat Well

I hope this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone, but James Madison University students ranked in the 2009 Princeton Review of the best colleges as having some of the happiest students and having some of the top food in the nation.

JMU, after being ranked #5 last year (and I believe #6 the year before), kept rising in the rankings and is ranked as having the #4 food in the nation. My bet is that we move higher next year after the new East Campus Dining Hall opens.

Also, a new rank for us (even though we've always known it) is our selection onto the list of having the happiest students. We came in at #18 on this list that also includes schools like Harvard, Yale, and ranking us just ahead of Duke.

We were also again selected for the 2009 Best Value Colleges – Public and Best Southeastern Colleges lists.

JMU Marketing Students Are Best in the Americas

...at least according to the recent 2009 Google Online Marketing Challenge. The three-student group of Rachel Bruton, Meredith Rauh, and Brandon Sockwell, led by College of Business Professor Theresa B. Flaherty, placed first in the Americas in the marketing competition, which includes North, Central, and South America. The Challenge pits teams from across the world against each other in a global online marketing competition that focuses on paid search advertising using Google AdWords – Google’s flagship advertising product. This team of three JMU students competed against approximately 10,000 students representing 2,187 teams from 57 countries. After the judging was complete, the JMU team placed in the top four globally overall.

The group decided to be part of the competition after the professor from their integrated marketing communications class, Theresa Flaherty, made an offer to be their faculty adviser. During the inaugural Challenge in 2008, she required her students to take part in the Challenge. But because she was not teaching that class during the spring semester, she extended the offer to do the Challenge to all of her former students. A total of 15 students, representing 5 teams of 3, took part in the 2009 Challenge from JMU. Bruton, Rauh, and Sockwell had worked together on other group projects and decided to take on the extra work load and learn more about AdWords. They knew it would be a valuable skill to have as a marketer.

So what did they actually have to do to win? For the Challenge, they had to find a company with 100 or fewer employees that had a website but had not been using Google AdWords for the past 6 months. The team selected Mobile Tours, which is a mobile touring company based out of Washington, DC. The team thought this would be a great fit for the Challenge because so many people wanted to visit DC due to the recent Presidential inauguration and overlap with the Cherry Blossom Festival. The group had to create a Google AdWords campaign to help increase traffic to their client’s website. To prepare, the students would have meetings periodically on Friday afternoons with Dr. Flaherty to learn about AdWords. Two search engine marketing firms from Charlottesville, VA, Search Mojo and the Rimm-Kaufmann Group, also gave presentations to participating teams. Search Mojo was founded by a JMU graduate, Janet Driscoll Miller. There are also JMU alumni working at both companies. Avelyn Austin and Amanda Chaney are JMU Marketing alums who work at Search Mojo. Also, as a result of the Challenge, Janet Miller hired a student from another one of the 2009 JMU Challenge teams – Paige Payne. The Rimm-Kaufmann group has JMU Marketing alums Ashley Burton Kennedy and Rachel Cook. One of the beneficial aspects of the Challenge was the opportunity to bring students, faculty, alumni, and practitioners together to network and talk about online marketing issues.

In order to prepare for the Challenge, Dr. Flaherty provided the students with a set of reading materials to study over the holiday break before the spring semester started. After selecting their business, the team had to write a pre-campaign report where they developed an initial strategy and then submitted it to Google. Then the real test came. With three weeks and a $200 Google AdWords voucher, they set up their campaign, bid on keywords, modified ad copy, and periodically made adjustments to optimize their results. The students’ winning strategy included two AdWords campaigns with 15 ad groups. They used other Google marketing and reporting tools—including Google Analytics, Keyword Generator, Dynamic Keyword Insertion, AdWords Editor, geo-targeting and restricted scheduling of ads—to adjust the campaign each day. After the three weeks was over, the final step was to write a post-campaign report in which they summarized their results, explained the changes they made during the campaign window, and provided recommendations for future online marketing strategy.

All three students volunteered for the competition, receiving no class credit or internship credit. Their motivation was “a competitive edge” in the workforce, said Bruton, the team captain. “You become much more emotionally invested when you work with a real company. You have the chance to see classroom theories put into action.” The group worked hard on the campaign, but were still shocked when they heard they won. Professor Flaherty reminded Bruton of the day she was in her office and said "Wouldn't it be crazy if we actually won?" As one of the four winning groups, they will receive laptop computers and are going to be flown out to Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, to get a tour of the world-famous Googleplex. While on their trip, they will meet with various west-coast JMU alumni as well. They're all very excited for that trip.

The experiences the students have gained are already paying off. Employers have been telling them that the Google Online Marketing Challenge always stands out on their resumes. In fact, all three students in the winning group already have jobs. Brandon Sockwell is working in Austin Texas for a company called Invodo. Meredith Rauh is working at GSI Commerce. Rachel Bruton will be working abroad at UBS Financial Services in London for the year. All three of them are interested in continuing some kind of work in the online marketing industry. Flaherty said the competition was one of the best experiences of her academic career. She was happy to take on the extra set of responsibilities of teaching these students because they continually demonstrated a true love of learning. Flaherty said “While I am proud of all 15 of my students who volunteered their time to participate in the Challenge, I am especially proud of my team that won the Americas region.”

In addition to this team's first place win in the Americas, there were two other JMU teams who were semi-finalists in the Americas region, ranking them in the top 50. While this is the best placement JMU has had, they definitely aren't new to this competition. In 2008, JMU placed five teams in the top 10 percent. I'd say JMU students are making a pretty good name for themselves in online marketing.

Coach Matt Brady and JMU sued by Marist

JMU Men's Basketball coach Matt Brady (along with JMU and the commonwealth of Virginia) are being sued by Marist college (Brady's former school). The lawsuit is over a line in Brady's former contract that states that he is not allowed to lure current players or recruits from Marist if he switches to another school. Four of his recruits from Marist (though only one of them had even signed a letter of intent) came to JMU. Some details have yet to come to light such as whether Brady was the one that asked them to come to JMU or if the recruits voluntarily followed him. JMU has yet to comment about the matter following their rule to not discuss current litigation. I think Hofstra Men's Basketball coach stated it best when he said, "I think that's ridiculous. They've got a good basketball coach at Marist. They should just move on." The fact that Marist is so ready to settle the case makes it look like they're not sure it's a very strong lawsuit.

JMU 2009-2010 OOC Men's Basketball Schedule

After the announcement of the game against Stanford, the out-of-conference schedule for the 2009-2010 JMU Men's Basketball team is complete. Looks to be a pretty good schedule with a couple really tough opponents that should push the Dukes to play their best. Brady is showing he has confidence in his team and definitely doesn't seem to be one content to do well, but wants to push to be the best. Unfortunately for the first part of that schedule, we won't have transfer Denzel Bowles until after Fall semester exams are finished (December 11). This means that the first game he should be available to play in is at Eastern Michigan. Additionally, it means that he will have four games to warm up before the game at Stanford, which could be crucial for post-season play. End of the year 08-09 Pomeroy rankings are in parentheses.

Nov. 12 (Thu) - @ Ohio State (37) - Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

Nov. 20-23 (Fri-Mon) - Coaches vs. Cancer Classic @ Florida International
(Murray State (137), North Carolina Central (343) and Florida International (262)

Nov. 28 (Sat) - UMBC (256)

Dec. 2 (Wed) - Norfolk State (297)

Dec. 12 (Sat) - @ Eastern Michigan (306)

Dec. 17 (Thu) - @ Gardner-Webb (252)

Dec. 19 (Sat) - Radford (188)

Dec. 23 (Wed) - Fordham (317)

Dec. 29 (Tue) - Stanford (49)

Feb. 20 (Sat) - Bracket Buster

Feb. 22 (Mon) - Longwood (313)

That puts our average opponent's rank at 230...not that difficult. Considering we ended last year at 140, the only teams that finished ahead of us were Ohio State, Stanford, and Murray State (barely). Let's hope we can take care of everyone we should beat, and at least play Ohio State and Stanford close. If we do that, hopefully we'll pick up a great team for Bracket Busters and get it televised. Also, the last time we played two BCS teams in one season was in 05-06 when we played Georgetown and Virginia Tech.

We'll have to wait another month before we get our CAA schedule, but so far it looks like we should be able to take care of business without too much trouble for most of these. We lost a couple crucial players, but we have a great group of guys coming back and an incredible recruiting class coming in that could possibly be productive from the beginning. Looks to be a great year for the Dukes and this writer has full faith in Coach Matt Brady.

JMU Dominates Across the Pond

This weekend the JMU Chorale and Madison Singers returned from a 12 day trip to the UK where they represented JMU and the United States in the International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, which has been running since 1947, is a six day festival of music, dance, and song.

The James Madison University Chorale and the Madison Singers counted themselves among groups from 29 countries around the globe participating in the Eisteddfod this year. Groups were required to submit recordings along with an application to be considered for participation. JMU competed in 6 categories: Youth Choir, Mixed Choir, Folk Song Choir, Chamber Choir, Male Choir, and Female Choir. The above picture features Dr. Walders, who led JMU at Eisteddfod, and the four singers who were the JMU representatives for the USA in the competition's showcase of nations (a la Olympic opening ceremony). Looks like a crowd that's gonna be ready for some tailgating in the Fall!

The James Madison University Chorale took 1st place in the Youth Choir competition- their first performance right out of the gate, edging out two other American choirs for a USA sweep. Along with winning first, JMU was presented with the International Trophy and £650 in prize money. See the first place performance here: http://www.llangollen.tv/en/clip/67.

The Madison Singers placed third in the Chamber Choir category claiming a £275 prize for the university. The University of Houston Chorale took first and an ensemble from Iceland took second. See the Madison Singers' performance here: http://www.llangollen.tv/en/clip/90.

James Madison University consistently ranked in the top 5 of the other four categories entered. The American groups were outstanding in the Eisteddfod and proved to be JMU's biggest competition across the board. The United States placed in the top 3 of every choral category and the Westminster Chorus (California) went on to receive the festival's highest honor, Choir of the World.

Prior to the Eisteddfod, JMU toured England with performances in London at St. Bartholomew the Great (Shakespeare in Love was filmed there) and at the Holy Trinity Church where the Dukes performed the Durufle Requiem with the University of London and Imperial College choirs. The following concerts were in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral (the best acoustic in the UK with a 7 second reverb), Coventry Cathedral, and The Church of the Holy Rood in Swindon where JMU had a joint performance with the Wessex Male Choir. The picture above was taken at the River Dee in Llangollen, Wales.

The Dukes turned some heads at their international debut and were featured on Welsh National Television and BBC radio. Only a university as great as James Madison could turn out a choir like this!

Go Dukes!

JMU on Colbert Report

On Thursday, July 16, 2009, the Colbert Report did a feature called "Cheating Death - Diabetes Dogs, Chocolate Milk & Swearing in Pain." In the segment he talks about different health topics, including using chocolate milk as a sports drink.
Next up, Sports Medicine. A new study at James Madison University backs up what I've always said: When you're exercising, chocolate milk is just as good as sports drinks. This is great news for America's vital thirst quenching industry, which is always looking for new colors to make fluids. Now they can add brown.

JMU Ice Hockey Interview

I recently sat down with JMU Ice Hockey goalie Douglas Fordham for an interview (as far as I know the first ever interview about JMU Ice Hockey...go figure). I think it's about time they get some recognition. After all, they are THE ice hockey team...as varsity as it gets at JMU...

1) When did the Ice Hockey team begin at JMU?

The Ice Hockey team began in March of 2008. The team manager Meg Emery organized mostly everything, got all the necessary paper work done, and was the driving force behind getting this team off the ground. Since then the ice hockey team has been doing very well as an organization at JMU.

2) How is the team selected? Are there tryouts? How many players are on the team?

This past year it was based on if you could play, you could play for us. We’ve had an incredible number of people asking about the team this year, and we’re expecting around forty or fifty players to come out, so this year we are introducing a tryout system. And we are coed, so everyone is welcome. We will take twenty players (18 players, two goalies) and also three reserves in case of injuries or players not being able to play.
Funny...I figured they just pulled names out of a hat...

3) Who is the coach?

Coach Frank Ashby is a William and Mary graduate from Richmond, VA. He has been tremendous for our team; I can honestly say without him there was no way we would be as good as we were last season, nor as good as we’re expected to be this upcoming season.

4) How many games do you play each year? When does your season take place?

Last season we played seven games, this year we are looking to get in around fifteen games. Twenty would be amazing, but fifteen is ideal. The schedule is still not complete, and won’t be until July (so soon), but we have some key games already. The biggest of those is a weekend “home-and-home” series against the University of Virginia on September 25th and 26th. Everyone on the team has those games circled, as we lost pretty bad to them last year (11-3).
It also helps for the team to play away, because it cuts down on costs....similar to away Football playoff games

5) What schools do you play?

Last year we played Liberty University three times (D2 once, D3 twice), Northern Virginia Community College, Roanoke College, UVA, and also Sperry Adult Hockey based out of Charlottesville. This year we joined the Blue Ridge Hockey Association in the Atlantic Division, so we will be facing new opponents such as Catholic University (formerly in the Mason-Dixon conference), William and Mary, George Mason, VMI, Radford, and VCU.

6) Where is your home rink?

Our home rink is the Charlottesville Ice Park, located in scenic downtown Charlottesville. The website is http://www.icepark.com

7) What was your record last year?

Our record was 4-3, which for an inaugural season is amazing. Our first ever win in school history came against Roanoke College (5-4). We were down a goal going into the third, but managed to put two in the net and take it home.

8) Do you have any traditions or rituals?

Haha, well I’m sure a lot of people have heard of some crazy rituals like not washing/changing socks or other articles of clothing. Personally, I make sure I take care of myself the night before so that the next day I feel good. Before the game I like to go for a light run, do some sprints, and stretch a lot. I usually say a prayer too. The one thing we do as a team is the before-game speech. It’s usually given by a captain or team leader, and sometimes by Coach Ashby.
All I heard was...blah blah blah sacrifice to the hockey gods blah...

9) Does the Ice Hockey team have any merchandise?

As of now, we do not have any official merchandise for sale. Any merchandise we choose to sell must be approved by UREC (University RECreation, they run sports clubs at James Madison) but we are hoping for shirts of some kind, and quite possibly jerseys. I know a lot of people would love to get their hands on a JMU Ice Hockey jersey. I want another one!!

10) Is there anything else you would like the readers to know about the JMU Ice Hockey team?

Come out to a game and see us play. Admission is free, and after the game there is plenty to do downtown in Charlottesville. We’re expecting the team to be pretty good this year, and with Coach Ashby at the helm I know we’re going to make a run for nationals. We also have a website if you want to get some up-to-date info, and see our schedule. http://www.brhockey.com/jamesmadison
They're looking to make a name for themselves...so other schools...consider yourselves warned!
